CPV

Concentrating Photovoltaics (CPV) technology is based on using concentrated sunlight to produce electricity by means of solar cells.

The idea behind is relatively simple: by employing optic elements to concentrate sunlight on much smaller but highly efficient solar cells like the new generation Triple junctions solar cells it is possible to achieve harvesting efficiency above 40% and producing 1 watt at a concentration ratio of 1,000 suns especially when combined with a sun tracker system.

In this way CPV can reduce costs by reducing the amount of semiconductor material employed while achieving efficiencies well above those reached by conventional photovoltaic systems. Evonik Cristal Materials Corporation offers a wide range of light focusing elements to be used as CPVs with different shapes: from parabolic to rod-like elements with dimension from 0.20 cm to 7.0 cm length.

Evonik Cristal Materials manufacturers CPVs by using the SiVARA™ Sol-Gel Technology that allows to produce elements virtually in any dimension. SAVOSIL™ CPVs made of silica glass can maximize the harvesting of sunlight by some additional percentage points in comparison to CPVs made by conventional optical glass because of the high transparency from the deep UV to Infrared region. CPVs can be produced upon customer´s exclusive design.
